You have to start off with a low low dose maybe a quarter of a pill and work your way up over the coarse of a week or 2, or until you find your correct dose (not to exceed 5mg a night). It may take some time for the body to get accustomed to it, but I swear by it. I've been taking it for years off and on. As we age our melatonin production decreases. Good luck. I hope you will try it again but in much smaller doses. Mark

Well, the one night I did take the melatonin it seemed like I spent most of the night in a semi-conscious state, not sure if the cause was the melatonin or something else- but in my mind the melatonin got the blame; I haven't taken it since.
I only took one 3mg cap, maybe that was just too much for me...?

I went ahead and ordered some melatonin from iherb.com, will see if it helps!
It got here already...iherb.com rocks! I've actually not had too bad a sleep nights lately, but with the likelyhood that "things will get worse before they get better", it's good to have some help on-hand.

I'm on zolpidem too. Stuff works amazing. I've never in my entire life fallen asleep so quickly and not fell groggy when I woke up. Only problem is I've been on it a little over a week and now the pill doesnt seem to be working like it was... so I'm about to eat another half. Good luck. I with those over the counter things worked for me too.
all the best,
Derek

For years I was prescribed Zopiclone by my gp but the problem was I got an addiction to them[bit like smoking].And it took the best part of 2 years to get off them.I will try the melatonin though and see how it goes.Problem is I can't sleep at all some=times an hour or so but don't sleep in the day.

I also use Melatonin and found it works really well--I usually take 2-3 caps every night--they are only 3mg. I like it cause you don't feel groggy or drugged.
Hmmm, something like the product in the following link:
I use melatonin also. the newest research indicates that lower amounts are more effective so start with half or even a quarter of a pill and increase over a week or two until you find your correct dose.
2 to 3 caps is a lot. I had read somewhere that you should not go over 5mg a night. You may want to research it a bit.
Also, I found that the sub-lingual pills work best...

My doctor gave me Zolpidem 10mg. I took medicine and slept well for 3 nights so far but I don't want to depend to it. I will try Melatonin.

I found natural over the counter sleep aids effective as well. I also take Benadryl that relieves the itching that I have and helps me fall asleep as well.

I got good results with Tylenol PM. The bottle said take two at bedtime. Being afraid of acetaminophen and liver poisoning, I cut the dose in half. But the combination of fever symptom relief and sleep aid really helped me out.

Are there any over-the-counter sleep aids that are actually effective? I would like "something" to help me drift off to sleep, and [hopefully] stay asleep for the better part of the night.
Good luck. I hope you will try it again but in much smaller doses.
