Hi Karen, If you are doing well I would wait, but that's just me. It would be a real bummer to get the placebo. I know the waiting is hard, but if this other drug is going to be more of a sure thing, what's a couple more years...the time is freaking flying by as it is Best wishes in your decision. If you are assigned the "placebo"...it would be 12 weeks placebo/12 weeks with the real stuff..still not easy..!!! (removed the confusion from the post-sorry....)

Here is my conversation w/the Clinical Research Coordinator for the Abbott Lab trial. The purpose of the study is to monitor the development and mutation of the Hep C virus. Participates will be notified immediately if the virus becomes resistant. They will do an APRI blood test in lieu of a liver biopsy. They will quantify success after SVR 12-24. Noted side effects: headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, dry-mouth are likely. If there are problems w/RBV, they will decrease the dose.
In my desire to wait and treat with Gilead vs. Abbott Lab, because of the safety and great success stories, here is what I found out. The coordinator shared that there are currently spots available for the Abbott trial but there are no guarantees that there they will be spots for the Gilead trial, spring 2013. She explained the reason, each company (Gilead, Abbott etc) sets their own criteria on not only who they want but also how each institution gets their spots. In Abbotts case, they assign so many to each hospital that is running a trial...Gilead on the other hand puts out a number of patients needed worldwide, it is up the hospitals to get their paperwork in order and submitted quickly to get their spots-another words, first come, first serve. This hospital was only able to acquire two spots in the last Gilead trial because of the large demand.
Over the next week, I will dig, dig, dig to get as much information on the Abbott Lab trial that I can. If anyone has been in the Abbott Lab trial, knows anyone who has treated in this trial or has any new information about ABT 450/333/267, please let me know. I must make a decision over the next couple of weeks..to treat with Abbott or gamble for a spot with Gilead.
