Procrit saved me from having to stop treatment. It may take a day or two to feel the full effect of the transfusion. But with treatment, his poor body is still battered.
I had the dose reduces also and still made it to SVR. They raised it once my hemoglobin got up to about 10 I think.
You've been through a lot. Hang in there!
All my best to you. xo Karen:)

Angelo had a transfusion on friday. They gave him two pints of A+ Blood
Based on some posts I read, although I did not expect him to get up and dance, but to at least look a little less tired.
What I saw was my husband still feeling tired, unsteady on his feet, who could not wait to go home and lay down.
The nurse said that for some people it may take a day or two to see the difference, well it has been 4 days and nothing.
No I am wrong, he has walked around the block on two occasions since friday.
I can't wait for him to start taking Procrit..... which will help him.. RIGHT????

Mena, I didn't have the transfusions but did get several shots of Procrit. Like britlitkaren it probably kept me from having to stop treatment from anemia caused by the Ribavirin.
With me it usually took a few days to 2 weeks to to feel the full effect of it. I felt better quicker after the first shot of it than ones after. The anemia can wear him out. Makes you tired and weak. I also got nose bleeds. Just let him take it easy. Being able to walk around the block is good if he can.
Transfusions are usually done if HGB is in the danger zone. The use of procrit has recently found to be a problem in some that have had a previous heart attack.
Take care.

Hi, my husband a has seven weeks left of tx. You have no idea how helpful reading what people are going thru has been. My husband is getting transfusions every other week. First time, 3 units; second time, 2 units; third time, 2 units. I was wondering if a lot of people have experienced this. He had incivek for 12 weeks, he ended up in hospital at 12 weeks. They cut his ribosphere in half and he has the pegases once a week. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Influence of ITPA polymorphisms on decreases of hemoglobin during treatment with pegylated interferon, ribavirin, and telaprevir
good luck

Hi Tracy and a warm welcome to you, I`m glad you decided to join us. Sounds like your husband has been going through a very rough time and must have a lot of determination to have stuck with it. We have several other members who have needed transfusions when their Hgb levels have dropped below a certain point, and I`m sure they will be happy to share their experiences with you. The decrease in his ribasphere dose should help too.
Wishing you and your husband all the best of luck with the rest of his treatment, not too much longer to go now!
