As Tig said, Iron supplements are not recommended unless you have very low serum iron. The Riba anaemia is not due to Iron deficiency. Take vitamin supplements if you like, but they won't help your blood parameters. Low platelets and neutrophils are due to Interferon, which shouldn't be reduced. Cheers.

Hi Lakegirl,
I suggest you first find out what you blood iron (ferrite) levels are before taking any iron supplements during treatment. Generally Iron supplements during treatment aren't recommended because your liver processes iron slowly when you have liver disease. Supplements tend to build up in your liver because it simply can't process it properly. A good over the counter vitamin supplement can be found in most health stores and pharmacies. I took Centrum without Iron and still do. The B12 vitamins can also provide you with some benefits if your doctor approves it. Some people have gotten B12 injections from their doctor's during treatment if warranted. I recommend you use our search function at the top center of the page and enter "Iron Supplements" in the search bar. We have some information there. Good luck!

I specifically asked that question of the doctor and was told no amount of supplements/diet would help. Procrit and/or a transfusion or reducing the Riba in my case....

From all of my research that what I found... that no supplements would help.. That's why I was very surprised when she suggested that today in our visit... I do not want to put anything else in my body that will make this harder OR be of no benefit to me... I will take all of the advice I can get...Thank You

I was told that medication based anemia would not benefit from iron supplements. Anybody else know about this? Iron pills are not pleasant and why take them if they aren't going to have any affect. I could be wrong, so hopefully the more experienced members can answer this as well.

I went to the Dr today.. and as expected all of my Blood counts are very Low... My Dr suggested that I take a multi vitamin and Iron supplement to help maintain my levels ( even Low) so she doesn't have to reduce my Riba dose.... I only have 2 1/2 months left...
Dose anyone have any suggestions on vitamins the do not have a lot of fillers and added junk in them that your body doesn't need... I am looking for the best one to help with the iron.. she suggested I take them 2 times a day until done with treatment... Iron can be hard on your stomach would like to find something gentle if possible.... ;)
