Malcom, thanks for your input.

However, Angelo's MELD score is currently 10, therefore he cannot get on the liver transplant list. Here in NY you need  at minimum to have a score of 15 to be considered.

The Doctor said the incidence of the HE and Edema was an isolated episode and therefore he has taken him off the meds for both conditions.

I have not seen my husband so sharp in a long time. He his back to his old self and better.

He also told him that we could try the  new GILEAD treatment (INF free ) next year if our insurance approves it.

I told the doctor that from what I had read, this new treatment is for naive people and he said don't worry about that.

He considers Angelo a Partial Responder.

We will see what develops!  My prayer is that God will watch over him and keep him well for a long, long  time.

Mena

Hi Mena,

Sorry but not surprised to hear the news.  Have you read the thread in this section called 'The monster came back' ?  It is from another Member, Dover514.  He was told he was not able to use Sofosbuvir, probably because of decompensated cirrhosis.  His MELD score is 14, similar to Angelo's, and he has had a transplant workup. This may be Angelo's only option.  As Angelo has had episodes of decompensation ( ascites and HE), it would be worth asking your Hepatologist whether this would preclude Angelo from any of the new Rx's.  If so, he should get on the transplant list ASAP.  Best wishes to you both.

Hi Mena! I'm sorry to hear the VL is positive again. Hopefully the new treatments coming soon will be the answer for Angelo (and you). I'm sure it wii! As for the question about blood typing, I don't believe that test alone will provide that information. If you are trying to donate a blood product, they do test for type and diseases, like HIV and Hepatitis.

I hope the best for you both, good luck!

Hello everyone,

as weeks pass from the day my husband stopped treatment, remembering all he went through seems like a distand bad dream!

We just got the results from his blood work done on 10/12 and although many things have gone back to normal or improved, the VIRUS IS BACK!

When he started treatment his V/L was 1506199  now  the result was

  HCV RNA QN, REAL TIME  it's    82201  <15 IU/ML

HCV RNA, QN PCR                    4.91     <1.18 LOG IU/ML

I am praying that it stays low for a very long time.

I also wanted to know if anyone can tell me if when someone is screened for blood type , and that person has HepC , does it show?

Mena

Hi Mena, I`m so sorry to hear this news, how disappointing you both.  It hasn`t all been for nothing though, Angelo`s time on tx will have given his liver a break from the virus all the time he was UND.

Tig is correct, a test for blood typing wouldn`t show up the Hep C infection, he would need more specialised blood tests for that.  For example, if he had a Hep C antibody test it would show that he has been infected at some time, and he would need to have an HCV RNA test to detect that he has an active infection.

I hope Angelo is feeling much better now that he has recovered from the nasty side effects, he had an unusually rough time, but at least you both know he tried to stay on tx as long as possible.  Try to stay optimistic, there are better treatment options in the pipeline and Angelo will be cured at some point in the future.

Take good care, both of you, and stay strong.
