Hi Angela,

It is great that you have joined this forum. There are a number of members on this forum who have a lot of knowledge about Hep C and the various treatment options. You have come to the right place. I am sure the more experienced members would soon reply to your specific questions.

Just remember, Hep C is treatable today, and there are a number of treatment options available.

There are a few people here who had cirrhosis but who successfully treated Hep C and their livers are in better shape now.

Keep the faith! I am sure you will be ok.

Hiya and Welcome Angela!

As you can see already, there is much info as well as constructive and compassionate advice to be found here.  You've come to the right place. ;) Nasty little blend of troubles you are dealing with.  I completely understand your dilemma trying to maintain a liver friendly diet.  There can be so many restrictions if you try to do it 100% right.  Throw in the Type 2 and, well...

I would certainly suggest that you pursue treatment for the hepatitis.  The newer meds are proving extremely effective and you would stand an excellent chance of clearing the virus. As for diet, I like Tig's suggestion of seeking out a professional dietician/nutritionist.  They would be best equipped to help you deal with your special needs.  There is a ton of free advice on the internet, not all of it good.  I am personally sceptical about most of what I read regarding supplements, magical dietary solutions etc.  A professional who understands your individual case via medical history, lab reports and talking with you personally would have a much better window into your inner chemisty.

Just my opinion..  Wishing you the best, Angela

Hi Angela, welcome from me too!  I`m glad you found us, it can be a stressful time getting used to the diagnosis of Hep C and then waiting to start treatment.  You`re with people who understand what you`re going through here, and everyone is friendly and helpful.

It would certainly be an easier treatment with just Sovaldi and Ribavirin without the interferon, and with your advanced stage of cirrhosis I should think it would be more suitable for you too.  I`m guessing then that you have genotype 1, is that right?

As for diet, I agree with Tig that we can`t really advise you what would be suitable for your diabetes, although for Hep C alone we always encourage people to eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and try to avoid ready prepared and heavily processed food products as much as possible, as they often contain high levels of sugar, salt, and additives as well as high fat content.  Drink plenty of liquids and of course avoid alcohol completely!

I`m not surprised that you`re feeling so tired, and you`re doing the right thing by getting treatment for your Hep C as soon as possible as there`s a very good chance that you`ll feel a lot better once the virus is cleared from your system.

Best of luck with getting your insurance sorted out, we have a lot of new members who are on the same treatment or waiting to start.  I`m sure other members will reply to you as well, and share their experiences, and please do feel free to join in with the discussions going on around the forum.

Keep in touch!  smile

Hello Angela,

Welcome to the forum, I'm glad you're here and think you'll find it informative. We've got a great group here and everyone will be more than willing to help you if they can. As you're looking around, be sure to use our search function at the top of each page. There youll find tons of good stuff and what you can't locate, ask and we shall find!

We have a lot of members that share similar and different diagnoses, but regardless of that, everyone will have a tip or two on how to handle things better as well as differently. We have people just diagnosed all the way to successful transplant recipients! They will introduce themselves along the way soon. It sounds like you've already had quite a struggle but the good news is you've decided to treat with some new and very effective drugs. Having avoided interferon will help you avoid some of the unpleasant side effects of the previous treatments.

Regarding your diet, as I'm not a dietician I can't provide any medical recommendations, and your doctor would be the best provider for them. Sounds like you already know that good healthy food, fresh veggies and proper hydration are the corner stones to a proper balanced diet. Have you spoken to a registered dietician? Often you can find online assistance and I will help you locate that information if you'd like. There will be others with some suggestions as well.

If you feel like sharing some additional information, like your genotype, liver function tests, etc., it will help us provide you with better informed opinions. Feel free to share anything or nothing, this is a friendly group that simply wants to help you through this tough time. Hang in there and again, welcome! Good luck!

Tig

I am a 39 yr old single mother of two and grandma to 1. I have recently been diagnosed with Hep C, Auto Immune Hep, Fatty Liver disease, and stage 4 cirrhosis as well as recently Type 2 Diabetes. I am currently awaiting the prior approval from my insurance for the Sovaldi since they do not believe that I will be able to handle the interferon. Still in a very confusing time trying to figure out what to eat, drink, or do. My Live is still somewhat functioning however some decompensation has occurred. I am still working however I have to go home at lunch and take a nap, then sleep when I get home. I have had to give up many things I enjoy, but am still fighting. My Dr has been very up front with many things including my prognosis. My question to many of you is does any one have a similar diagnosis, what do you eat? May things that I can have for my liver I can't have for my diabetes and vice versa. I have been doing many fresh fruits and veggies and have lost 43 lbs, however recently found out that the sugar free things that are ok for diabetics can damage my liver even more. Very frustrated. Any advice would be great..

Thank you everyone
