Quick, somebody call a medic for Tig! smile C.

Hey, BTW - speaking of equal opportunity, somebody sent me a really intriguing link the other day, where it seems anyone "could" get (up to) $3500.00 per month and an all-expense paid vacation to some lab in sunny California, merely in exchange for just some wee drops of your plasma!  Wow! (Well, quantity was dependent - on a good day ... maybe 2 draws max. in one week, 5 days apart, at about 1800 cc a crack, give or take - there IS fine print).

So, the "antibodies wanted" link piqued my curiousity, immediately!, as i live in the cruel cold lattitudes of Canada, I pine for the warmth of some sunny southern dune, and I could really use THAT kinda monthly cash flow!, and here I was thinking I had made a reaally good deal up here ... Gilead cured me and I signed on to be giving my blood away to them for a mere $50 bucks a throw twice a year for the next 5 years!! Mutually beneficial tho. We (gilead and me) are kinda exploring/practising "safe science", which in turn in a round about way could be of long term benefit to everyone!

But alas, if something sounds too good to be true ... there IS that "fine-print" at the Cal. lab,! I had to put away my suitcase, bathing suit catalogue and medical tourism pamphlets. They only VANT very certain plasma (from the unfortunate walking untreated humans, if they can manage to mosey in), who are packing "active" Epstien-Barr, Lyme disease, hep b (with a load) or measles! No cured HCV'ers, nor spontaneously resolved B's with core antibodies, need apply. Sigh. I'm crushed, too healthy to be a sought-after lab commodity. I possess not the "just right" goldi-locks antibodies/antigens that are the objects of their desire. My plasma is not good enough for the general plasma use, nor is it bad enough to have the wanted antibodies/antigens! Medical holiday plan foiled.

Hmm, "active" untreated subjects wanted? Well, must be quite a fast turn-over of donors through that lab then, given the desirable prerequisites - you "could be" worth (up to) $3500 a month, but ... for how long?, before you get labbed out due to seeking treatment/obtaining a cure from your afflication, or, perhaps death may curtail the fun destination holiday deal.

Man, one minute I was all hyped up, hopefully singing "Cal-i-for-ni Here I Come", now it's back to I still got the "Cold Winter Blues", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Aj-htjqfdk

What an interesting business this procurement of bodily fluids is. confuse C.

Hey Canuck,

If you really want to be "just like me", there's a doctor somewhere that will hook you up! Just tell them to leave the prostate out, they aren't much fun at my age...

I know, I know....no

I love hats.

They probably could do just that and at the same time jack up the price of a blood draw and special testing to detect the tag or its absence.

Then the Insurance Company jacks up their prices, so in turn your employer explains why your insurance went up along with your copay which upward trend was offset by the downward trend of the end result benefits.

Why yes, I do believe it is po$$ible.

Ya Tig, sumpin like that sounds plausible - playing "tag".

My, I stumbled and hurt my head just trying to figure out how "charitable" all these folks are - wonder just what kind of dollars are involved in the foreign and mysterious politics/business of international "research".

I decided (as the article was written) that the goals/work remained cloaked in indecipherability, what they are actually doing is just left up to guessing. Lofty altruistic intentions implied, to benefit humanity. But I found searching up the other drugs/treatments they mentioned (to which they have already applied their "proprietory" HUMANIZING technique to), interesting. Who knew, that (1) you can practise and tinker in "humanization" for the masses, and (2) that it was patentable! hee hee

The big never ending circle (dejavu all over again) of diagnostics, treatment, or "prevention" is big business.

Doncha just love a secret! smile C.

PS - I have always been enamoured of the folk who master the simple but profitable "make money digging a hole, and then get paid for filling it up again". Drain humanity (no shortages there) of life blood, then just keep refilling us in isle 9, GMO is not such a bad thing is it? - eventually, as disease modified people, being intact vessels, functional, able to work and pay taxes, we would all end up being just like everybody else! Does this mean I can aspire to be just like you! Oh, the oneness! smile

Okay, now I'm going to put my Scientist hat on and use my hypothetimagination. It's usually full of discarded bovine disc shaped material, but in this instance it's not fully digested, so bare with me. I may actually make sense, so try to follow closely!

Would it possible to tag an introduced antigen? When the antibody attacks the antigen, it works to destroy the invader. If they could leave a testable tag or marker, it would differentiate a live or previous viral response from the inoculated model.

Okay, I'm taking this hat off. That hurt my brain or what's left of it! biggrin

Hmmmm?

Observation: If they incorporate HCV Antibodies as a vaccine, then those who take the vaccine would logically test positive for the Anti-Body for the rest of their life. That would eliminate that person from Blood and Organ donations.

Anyone else see a major train wreck ahead?

Someday, one day, (eventually) all these people all over the world who are holed up in labs trying to come up with immunization to prevent contracting HCV, will succeed! In the interim yay for "novel" drug research as without it we would not be where we are today, being cured of HCV with the new DAA's. Ah, but to prevent HCV, negating DAA treatment, that is a noble quest! Hard to decipher just what these folks are truly working on, but, one could hope it is just another one of those steps, inching us ever closer to prevention and eradication?

Research charity licenses HCV antibody to drug developer

March 17, 2017

MRC Technology has licensed an antibody to Newsummit Biopharma for the development of a novel therapeutic treatment for hepatitis C, according to a press release from MRC Technology.

"As a charity, MRC Technology focuses on areas where there are unmet patient needs, helping to get health care innovation to patients sooner and improving lives through science," Dave Tapolczay, chief executive officer of MRC Technology said the in the release. "Working with centers such as the [Center for Virus Research] to find science with potential, then developing that science to the stage of licensing, is essential to impacting the translation of innovation into real patient benefit."

Researchers including Arvind Patel, MD, MRCP, at the Center for Virus Research, University of Glasgow, developed the antibody, which scientists at MRC Technology humanized using the company's proprietary technique, according to another press release. Scientists previously used the technique to humanize Keytruda (pembrolizumab, Merck), Tysabri (natalizumab, Biogen) and Actemra (tocilizumab, Roche).

"We have been working successfully with MRC Technology since 2009 to attract innovative therapies and diagnostics from the U.K. and Europe onto the Chinese market," Jun Ren, CEO, Newsummit Biopharma, said in the MRC Technology release. "With this license agreement, and through our unique collaborative innovation ecosystem, we aim to quickly tackle one of China's major public health issues, as well as provide patients from Asia and the West with a valuable therapeutic option against HCV."
