Hey Malcolm

Looking at your Platelets is fascinating, my conjecture would be.

Platelets are produced in our bones via bone marrow and from what I read regarding improving bone health and subsequently marrow and its platelet production, exercise / physical activity (You= Golf, Biking, fishing etc.) All those years of suppressed  blood production / 4 course of interferon and your spleen shrinking back to almost normal can't but help.

Check this link about Bone health and exercise http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/09/110901112531.htm

What ever the reason is, being active is definitively part of the answer. Not easy to do but the mind leads the body, or a better way to say it is  'The spirit, of course is eager, but the fresh is weak. (Mark 14:38)

It takes fortitude to get out of our easy chair and get active, a habit and way of life we all can learn from.  Thanks for showing the way, AGAIN!  YAAHHOO

Cheers , P. S.  Hope to see you on the golf course to help with my tee shots

Thanks for the kind words.

Z, you know how I feel about supplements. I was taking fish oil for a year, to see if that helped my old joints. I've now stopped, and the joints are fine. I'm not bothering with another Fibroscan. I know what my liver feels like, it's still firm so I'll continue with the 6 monthly ultrasounds. My Hepatologist agrees about the Fibroscan. Whether I'm 4, 8 or 12 kPa doesn't matter a toss. I know I'm cirrhotic and hope that will ease over the years. There is no evidence supporting the use of any of the current antifibrotics.

The platelet count is surprising. Cirrhotics rarely go over 150k. Cheers.

Wow Malcolm, those are fantastic lab results and very interesting indeed!

Amazing the difference since you finished your treatment 2 years ago and looking at these numbers must give hope to many here who are concerned about whether their liver function will improve post treatment and post SVR.

You`ve got your life back and it was worth all the struggles and misery of long and difficult treatments.

Very pleased for you and no wonder you look so happy.  (And no wonder your wife looks so happy too!)

now you have enzymes and platelets like 15yr old. Do post "boring" lab results, i always enjoy in looking at numbers :) It must has been great feeling to reclaim fully your liver back! Well deserved reward after all those interferon journeys...

When is your next Fibroscan session? any progress on fibroscore/reverse of cirrhosis? Have you been taking any supplements/antifibrosis meds?

cheers!

Hey Malcolm,

Looks good! Must be a relief and accomplishment to see those values look so much better. You worked hard to get to this point, congrats on your hard earned success.

John, I used to know someone that was 4'12", she always claimed to be 5 feet tall. I think she was trying to pull one over on us! Ha, ha!

Hi Malcolm,

Your labs may not be of much interest because they are "normal." Since getting past Aplastic Anemia and then Hep C for all those years that I was blissfully unaware, something was always out of whack with my lab results, particularly LFTs. "Normal" is nice.

You can take a page from my grandmother who was diagnosed as a mild diabetic in her early 70s. She rigorously watched her carb intake, lost 30 lbs. (she weighed 85 lbs. for the last two decades of her life at 4'12") and took Phenformin while it was still on the market. She outlived diabetes (HBP too) and wasn't on any medication or dietary restrictions when she passed away at 98. Grandmother's "diet" in her 90's was primarily bacon, ham, fried chicken, mustard greens and occasionally grits. If you live long enough, you can eat anything!

Hi Mallani,

Your labs give definite hope for all of us who have reached SVR, especially those of us with cirrhosis.  Long term follow-up information is not available

without the forums and people like you.  Helps us to realize that SVR is just the beginning of liver health.

I go for EOT plus 15 months labs in April.  Merck will pay for labs every six months for 3 years after EOT.  They did the first set at EOT plus 3 months.

Congratulations !!  Thanks for posting.  It is important to see the progress.

I like seeing that your platelets went up so much. That's great!

My doctor told me that my platelets, at 86 right now, would not go up with SVR, but clearly it does happen. Good to see!

Hi all,

I've just got my EOT + 2 year Labs, so I'll post them. Not of much interest except to me, but they show liver function can improve.

                    EOT               EOT + 1 year              EOT + 2 years

ALT               81                 46                              36

AST              80                  36                             30

GGT             169                 50                             43

Albumin         35                  44                             45

Platelets       46k                153k                          258k

Hb               71 (USA 7.1)   152 (15.2)                 168 (16.8)

I believe Albumin and platelet count give the best indication of liver function in cirrhotics. I obviously don't need to do a VL.

It's a bit annoying that my HbAIc is slightly up at 53 mmol/mol, despite a normal blood sugar. I have to accept I have mild diabetes and watch the GI index more closely. Cheers.
